February 1, 2011

i wish i had the super-power of not needing to sleep.

i work best at night.  i always have been a night owl, but even much moreso since i had kids and figured out that peace and quiet makes for a faster, more efficient, and most of the time a more creative way to get things done.  however, i am tired.  i’ve been tired for like 4 years.  and i’m sick.  i felt for a long time that if i’m not physically capable of being a night owl anymore, God should at least give me a few doses of morning person every now and then.  nope.  never.

i really do need to get to bed…i’ve been on the internet for 3 hours…pausing every 3 minutes to cough.  a dry, annoying, every-time-i-take-a-breath-i-need-to-cough kind of cough.  i haven’t felt that bad during the day (especially today since i got a glorious nap), but at night, all through the night the cough and congestion kick it into high gear.

apparently my domain expired.  for my website.  if you click on that little box to the right that has my logo and says “the website”, it’ll now take you to some dorky generic domain registry ad page.  that’s why i’ve been on the internet since 8:30…doing research on what my new site should be like…suggestions welcome.  i’m thinking i want to just nix the whole website thing and just do a fancier blog.  especially since i’m going to be combining my blogs….i feel i’ll be more devoted to upkeep and making it cool if i only have one spot on the web to worry about.  however, i am feeling VERY uneasy about having to leave this blog and its archives behind.  wondering about making it into a book…

i’m rambling.

here’s a sampling of my day brought to you by google images.

January 18, 2011

full day.

any day that starts with the kids not climbing into bed with me until 7:30 and pre-made cinnamon rolls soon after that, can’t go badly, right?
the girls played “happily” together for a few hours this morning (the only unfortunate part of that is that their new favorite place in the house is our closet…it really didn’t need a good trashing). then we packed up and went to meet some friends (jenny!) at the beach. i was apparently clueless that it was GORGEOUS outside and didn’t even bring sunscreen! we were only there for around an hour, so any “color” my kids got will be gone tomorrow. got home late so layne didn’t get a nap, but she actually did great…contrary to what i’d prepared myself for.

my friend rachel and her girls came over for awhile while i was making chicken pot pie.  we hadn’t seen them since before christmas, so the girls and i both had fun seeing them.  rachel and i have decided that we’re going to start trading babysitting.  she and her husband have no family in town and have only lived in jupiter for about a year.  most of their friends live about 25 minutes south, so babysitting options have dwindled a little.  they never get to go out, and i really need to have a day every now and then where i can catch up on things for my business.  so, we’re thinking that she’ll watch my youngest 2 kids (while harper’s in school) for a few hours some Fridays and then that same night, we’ll keep her girls while she and her hubby go out for a dinner date.  hopefully we’ll start making this happen like once a month.

[don’t hate me for saying this, but david crowder is seriously overated. i know he’s probably caused alot of people to come to know Jesus, but he CAN’T SING. anytime he comes on my kick-butt pandora worship station, i thumbs-down him.]

after rachel left, we ate and did the bedtime thing and then i headed to Bible study.  so grateful for time with so many beautiful, sweet, FUN, Godly women.  there are so many tuesdays where i think about not going because i’m just drained and tired and don’t feel like small-talking to anyone, but i always feel so encouraged and renewed when i get home.  (holla, tina & sarah! they’re the only 2 with blogs…other than jenny who i’m sure i already embarrassed once.)

i just spent about an hour working on transfering scripture onto a painting.  it’s my least-favorite part, but i figured out that if i listen to worship music while i’m doing it, i really get alot out of it.  like, i really feel like i’m worshipping while i’m tracing.  sounds dumb, but the work is really mindless, so i can focus on the words i’m hearing.  i tear up every now and then when something hits me hard.  i appreciate that because it could be a song i’ve heard several times before, but i had never really thought about it.

if you hadn’t noticed, i put a button on my sidebar (“praying for joanne”).  if you’re interested in getting updates on joanne, you can click on it.  at this point she’s still in a medical-induced coma, but they are saying she’ll be hopefully coming out of that sometime in the next several days.  a small step in what will be a long, long walk.  i am still so struck by this situation and have been really thankful for the reminder that we can make all the plans we want, but God will laugh at us.  chuckle…lovingly.

it’s almost midnight. i need to go to bed. i need to go to bed and “accidentally” wake up ryan and then try to fall asleep before he falls back to sleep (virtually impossible).

Famous people who were also born on November 8th:

  • Parker Posey: 42
  • Bonnie Rait: 61
  • Courtney Thorne-Smith: 43
  • Bobby Bowden: 81  (YES!  i’ve always loved this one!)
  • Bram Stoker

i have an “On This Day In History” site on my favorites…i think one time i was thinking i could make up some silly holidays to do crafts with the kids about or something.  anyway, that stuff is interesting to me.

in other news…

  • i took the kids to target to get groceries.  a few days ago i was looking for stamps in my wallet and i found a target gift card with a baby design on the front.  “hmm…wonder how much is left on this thing.”  usually if i have a card in my wallet for a long time it’s because there’s like $4 left on it and i always forget about it.  i knew it had to be at least 5 months old because i haven’t gotten a baby gift since then.  anyway, i got up to the check-out and my total was $76.23.  i handed him the gift-card fully expecting to still owe at least $70.  WRONG.  the card had $75 on it!  thank you, SoFly girls!!  i had completely forgotten about it and it paid for our groceries.  awesome.
  • our church had a fall festival thing on saturday night.  at the sign-up table they had a cute basket full of apples and carmels.  there was a contest to see who could guess how many carmels there were.  we won, thanks to my father-in-law and ryan both giving me numbers as i was preparing to write (they said 275 and 250, so i guessed 232…there were actually 272).  the basket came with instructions on how to make carmel apples…hoping to try it sometime this week…maybe tomorrow.  i LOVE carmel apples and haven’t had one in forever…thinking we need to roll them in sprinkles or nuts or something…maybe i’ll post pictures.
  • i met (and exceeded) my charity:water goal, thanks to the generosity of many great friends and family.  i am so so so excited about seeing where this money goes.  (i still have like 70 days left, so if you want to give, DO IT NOW!!)
  • there have been times i’ve thought about giving up Facebook.  anyone who has it knows what an incredible time-waster it can be.  however, today was a day when i was so happy to have it.  it is so much fun to get so many birthday wishes from people from every time and place in my life.  i loved it!!

gotta hit the sack.  here’s hoping that maitland will give me one last gift: a full night’s sleep.

•something i am thankful for right now:  our new DIGS!!  we are loving being in a house!

July 30, 2010

week in review.

this week was…well, quite a week.  maitland is getting a tooth (already!) and i think i’ve also figured out that he has some type of dairy sensitivity (there’s only one way to figure that out and it’s not fun). monday and wednesday were full of activity, but the rest of the week we really just hung out here…which is really rare for us…i get claustraphobic.  all of my favorite bloggers post alot of pictures and i am lazy terrible about it, so i decided to do a mother of a photo post.  here goes:

monday: we got up and got out by 8:45…followed my sweet friend courtney out to loxahatchee where she keeps her horse, hank.  harper and i had been once before, but i don’t think layne had ever even seen a horse in real life.  she was good with it until i set her up on top of him…not crazy about that.  court was SO patient and kind and helpful to the girls while she let them help with grooming hank and even giving him a treat.  they absolutely loved everything about every minute we were there (except for layne ON the horse).  after the barn, we went to chick-fil-a to kill some time before we drove up to tequesta to pick up my friend kat‘s son, tookie.  he was at our house the whole afternoon until after dinner.  tookie is SUCH a sweet precious little guy.  they all had a great time…even layne, whose only nap that day was like 20 minutes in the van.

tuesday:  kind of a blur actually.  🙂  we were home ALL day.  maitland was super fussy and i had no obligations, so we just hung out.  made pancakes and ended up in my pajamas until about 4:00.  i haven’t had a day like that in forever and it was actually really nice.  at 4:00, instead of heading to the gym like normal, i decided we needed some outside air so we walked to the playground.  it’s about half a mile and i was stoked that i figured out a way that all 3 kids could ride in the double stroller (harper stands sort-of in-between the seats).  it was hot out, but it was a nice change of pace for all of us, and just nice to get outside for a bit after being shut-in all day.

wednesday:  my friend alyssa texted me telling me there was a free veggie tales movie that day.  i knew we’d be late, but decided to go anyway.  we got there about 10 minutes after it started.  it was layne’s first movie and she did great…SO cute sitting in the big seat.  maitland slept through much of the movie, so that was nice.  after the movie we went to super target and got some groceries for a picnic lunch and then went to the fountains in royal palm.  the kids had a blast and a half.  we were only home long enough for layne to sleep for about an hour and then we went over to visit my sis-in-law and the kids she babysits for.  the girls swam with them and maitland and i just hung out poolside.  we got home just in time for me to nurse the baby and toss him at ryan while i ran out the door to the gym (first zumba class!).

thursday:  we didn’t do much….i can’t remember much.  layne randomly woke up with a gross snotty nose, so i was trying to keep her pretty quiet.  we went to publix and that’s about it.

friday: we had big plans for a lemonade stand this week (one reason we went to publix on thursday).  so, right after breakfast we spent about 45 minutes working on signs for the “stand”.  maitland was again very fussy so i was hesitant to go to the gym, but we did anyway.  i was only on the bike for 10 minutes when they called me back to the kidzone to get him.  the girls played on the porch for awhile after that, which is sometimes really nice (even when they put more sidewalk chalk on thier bodies than on the concrete).  harper and i made the lemonade during layne’s nap (it turned out DELICIOUS) and then when loo woke up we all headed downstairs.  we were only down there for like 15 minutes before we ran out of lemonade, but i could tell harper really loved it.  may have to do it again before we move.  after we ran out of lemonade, one of our sweet neighbors (an older lady named mercedes) invited the girls up to her house and told me to enjoy my shower.  wow!  such a nice blessing…not to mention that baby boy feel asleep 20 seconds into said shower.  we had dinner in west palm with ryan’s sister and cousin-in-law and her brother.  it rained cats and dogs the whole time we were in the restaurant, but it’s an open-air place, so it was actually pretty cool.

now, ryan’s over at a buddy’s house and i’m avoiding any type of housework…thus this ridiculously long post.

just posted on my photography blog, too.

this was one of the signs for the lemonade stand.  harper has recently learned to write her name (good thing she goes to school because i’d had no idea she was capable) and i think she’s getting really good at it.  she writes “harper h” because there was another harper in her class at school who was “harper g”.  at the very top of the photo you can see where i wrote “lemonade” on a piece of paper…she copied it and i think she did a great job!  the “E” is my favorite.

i still have no idea why harper didn’t want to be in this picture.

poor guy did alot of this this week.  (don’t judge me for photographing him while he is ticked off.)

one of the only ways i could get him calm.  today he hung out in here for about 15 minutes.  just laid there while i had my laptop on the counter.

he did have a few smiles for us.  cutie.

July 28, 2010

•something i accomplished today: movie theater with all 3 kids by myself (and the seat-saving assistance of alyssa)
•something i screwed up today: there is a huge pile of laundry in a chair that’s been waiting to be folded since yesterday morning. still sitting there.
•something fun i did with the kids: aforementioned movie theatre (free veggie tales); fountain fun; and some swimming with aunt erin after layne’s nap. it was layne’s first movie! she did great…loved it.
•something funny or cute one of my kids did or said: layne is so adorable when she pretends to be buzz lightyear…can’t quite get it out when she tries to say “to infiinity and beyond!” it comes out more like a series of mumbles followed by “YOND!”
•something yummy i ate today: i randomly bought starburst at target…hadn’t had those in forever.
•something i read today: i just read a whole bunch of blogs.
•a tv show or movie i watched today: ryan and i have been watching “carrier”. if you have yet to see this movie, you should do so soon. it is 10 hours, but it is excellent.
•something i did today that i hardly ever do: never done it, actually. a ZUMBA class…so fun. so…latin. i felt very non-latin. 🙂 can’t wait to go again next week!
•something i did today that i do every day: OJ.
•something i am thankful for right now: this laptop (i’m sitting in bed next to ryan while he reads) and a sleeping baby close by.

July 7, 2010

  • something i accomplished today:  photo session (w/maitland in tow)
  • something i screwed up today:  once again didn’t get around to trimming layne’s bangs.  ugh.
  • something fun i did with the kids:  i didn’t really do it “with” her, but i love it when harper does games on the computer.  i love watching her figure things out.
  • something funny or cute one of my kids did or said:  today i picked up lunch at chick-fil-a and brought it to my friend jenny’s house on the way back from my photo session (she babysat for me).  layne had only eaten like 2 bites of chicken and was asking for something else.  i told her she couldn’t have anything else until she ate her chicken.  i went over to the couch to feed the baby.  layne walked over, about 30 seconds later, with her mouth full of every piece of chicken on her plate but one (i think there were like 6 pieces).
  • something yummy i ate today:  3 kinds of awesome wood-fired pizza at a girls’ dinner (yummy and fun!)
  • something i read today:  i have yet to do it.  the power of a positive mom.
  • a tv show or movie i watched today:  watched the first half of Rachel Getting Married.  like it alot so far.
  • something i did today that i hardly ever do:  photo session.  ha!
  • something i did today that i do every day:  stayed up too late.
  • something i am thankful for right now:  my sweet husband just walked in.  i’m very thankful for him.

  • something fun i did with the kids:  play-doh
  • something funny or cute one of my kids did or said:  pretty much everything that comes out of layne’s mouth these days is cute.  planning a post on her sometime in the next few weeks.
  • something yummy i ate today:  luigi’s italian ice (about 20 minutes ago)
  • something i read today:  hasn’t happened yet, but i need to read a few chapters in my new book (the power of a positive mom) for a new Bible study at church
  • a tv show or movie i watched today:  Wipeout was hilarious.
  • something i did today that i hardly ever do:  cleaned the wood floor
  • something i did today that i do every day:  fed and clothed the children
  • something i am thankful for right now:  at this instant, i’m thankful for laughing with my husband on the couch (last comic standing).  feeling tired and blessed.

    flexing my muscles

i’m trying to get back into shape physically and have decided that i also need to start flexing my photography muscles a little bit.  woke up this morning and decided to do sort-of a “day in the life” kind of thing.  last day in tallahassee…here goes:

woke up around 8:30…4 used diapers next to the clock (the number of diapers in the pile always indicates how many times i’d been up the night before with my Little Buddy).  me in my p.j.’s…honestly bothers me alot that they don’t match.

my Little Buddy watching the ceiling fan…he’s about to outgrow that binky.  i’ll miss it.

staying at nana’s means dessert after breakfast…always popsicles on the front porch.

if you hadn’t figured it out already (red mouths, yellow popsicles), this morning they each had 2!

i noticed this week how TALL all the trees have gotten.  love this sweetgum.

this house holds many many memories for me.  besides the 400 pictures of me, here’s one other piece of evidence that i grew up here:  a height chart on my former-bedroom door.  if my parents’ ever move, they’d better take our doors with them.  i need to get something like this going for my kids before they’re as tall as we are.

[did you notice that in 1988 i grew 2 inches and gained TEN pounds?!]

this afternoon mom and i took the kids to this place.  zoinks.  it’s a huge room filled with inflateables (slides, obstacle courses, etc) and arcade games.  unbeknownst to us, wednesdays are free afternoon days.  it was total chaos.  i am not a paranoid mom, and i was…well…paranoid.  the place was absolutely packed and it was driving me crazy that at no time did i have all 3 of my kids in my view at once, much less my kids AND my niece and nephew.  mom and i kept looking at each other like, “is this for real?”  i set maitland’s carseat up against one of the toddler inflateables and it was bouncing him around enough that he fell asleep.  this tempted me to just leave him there and walk around with the other two kids, but i kept thinking, “it’s chaos in here.  someone could pick him up and walk out with him and i would never know it.”

my one consolation was that i’d fed maitland right before we left the house, so i didn’t have to walk around like this poor woman was (however, i should point out that that is about the most modest job of breastfeeding i have ever seen…without someone using a cover):

when we got home it had just been pouring rain.  the kids played in the driveway with the umbrella and jumped in the puddles and rode thier scooters through the water while they waited for thier dinner.  i took alot of fun pictures, but i’m tired, so i’m only posting this one.

my grandma was here for dinner tonight.  she lives in an assisted-living facility here and my dad goes and picks her up all the time.  she is 94 and is sometimes annoyed by loud kids and noise, but tonight she seemed not to mind at all when her great-grandson was a little fussy.  as long as i can remember she has had painted fingernails and lots of jewelry.

headed home tomorrow.  stopping at my sister’s for lunch, so hopefully the drive won’t be bad.
