Famous people who were also born on November 8th:

  • Parker Posey: 42
  • Bonnie Rait: 61
  • Courtney Thorne-Smith: 43
  • Bobby Bowden: 81  (YES!  i’ve always loved this one!)
  • Bram Stoker

i have an “On This Day In History” site on my favorites…i think one time i was thinking i could make up some silly holidays to do crafts with the kids about or something.  anyway, that stuff is interesting to me.

in other news…

  • i took the kids to target to get groceries.  a few days ago i was looking for stamps in my wallet and i found a target gift card with a baby design on the front.  “hmm…wonder how much is left on this thing.”  usually if i have a card in my wallet for a long time it’s because there’s like $4 left on it and i always forget about it.  i knew it had to be at least 5 months old because i haven’t gotten a baby gift since then.  anyway, i got up to the check-out and my total was $76.23.  i handed him the gift-card fully expecting to still owe at least $70.  WRONG.  the card had $75 on it!  thank you, SoFly girls!!  i had completely forgotten about it and it paid for our groceries.  awesome.
  • our church had a fall festival thing on saturday night.  at the sign-up table they had a cute basket full of apples and carmels.  there was a contest to see who could guess how many carmels there were.  we won, thanks to my father-in-law and ryan both giving me numbers as i was preparing to write (they said 275 and 250, so i guessed 232…there were actually 272).  the basket came with instructions on how to make carmel apples…hoping to try it sometime this week…maybe tomorrow.  i LOVE carmel apples and haven’t had one in forever…thinking we need to roll them in sprinkles or nuts or something…maybe i’ll post pictures.
  • i met (and exceeded) my charity:water goal, thanks to the generosity of many great friends and family.  i am so so so excited about seeing where this money goes.  (i still have like 70 days left, so if you want to give, DO IT NOW!!)
  • there have been times i’ve thought about giving up Facebook.  anyone who has it knows what an incredible time-waster it can be.  however, today was a day when i was so happy to have it.  it is so much fun to get so many birthday wishes from people from every time and place in my life.  i loved it!!

gotta hit the sack.  here’s hoping that maitland will give me one last gift: a full night’s sleep.

7:12 AM

i should probably be waking up the girls right now, but i just wanted to check in quickly.

so, we are moving this week.  literally.  every time ryan or i goes over to the new place we take a box or two or a basket of toys or a metal star from the wall (harper was upset by that one and promptly told me that the wall wasn’t pretty anymore).  our current house is a WRECK and i’ve given up on trying to have it not be.  i’m keeping it clean (wiping the counters, sweeping the floors), but not neat.  reinforcements arrive on thursday night so starting friday morning we should be getting quite a bit done.  hoping that by monday i’ll be almost unpacked and that by the end of next week i’ll be somewhat organized.

the whole concept of the girls living in a HOUSE for the first time is cool.  yesterday evening i did a little painting and ryan met us over there and brought pizza.  we had a picnic on a dropcloth.  i was so annoyed i didn’t have my camera because it was one of those moments when i thought, “i want this image burned on my brain.”  super special family picture.  anyway, as we were leaving, harper ran out to the mailbox, opened it and said, “no mail today!”  i was thinking how exciting that must be for her….for her entire life we’ve gotten our mail out of a little silver hole with a door.

this whole process is very exciting to me (i swear i have a huge smile on my face every time i’m packing a box), so i’m not in a rush to have it overwith, but there are alot of things that i’m looking forward to in the next 6 months or so, so i won’t mind when the moving in part is done:

  • starting up tuesday night Bible study again with some of my favorite women (and we’re reading Crazy Love by Francis Chan, which is a book i’ve been dying to get through)
  • assisting my talented friend Kat Braman at several weddings
  • shooting one of my own next month
  • cooler weather (which feels like it’s already started, although i’m sure i’m being deceived somehow)
  • Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas (we’ll get to have lights outside this year!)
  • Harper learning to read…i’m expecting to see her doing some probably before Christmas…she is flying through everything she’s being taught right now
  • so so so excited to start painting for the Homespun Chic Marketplace i’m participating in in April.  it’s always been a dream of mine to take part in a “craft fair/art show”, and this one seems like it’ll be really good.  i have big plans and in the new house i have an actual workspace.  SO STOKED to get some things on canvas.  (if you want to see some of my past works, you can go to my other blog, scroll to the bottom and click on “paintings”.)  several of my friends who have Etsy shops are doing it too, so that makes it extra fun and exciting.
  • watching Maitland learn to sit up and crawl….okay let’s be honest: i’m only excited about the sitting up part.  he can stay on his bottom for 6 months for all i care.  haha

it’s now 7:30 and my girls really need to be up!  gotta run.

the new place

August 16, 2010

day in numbers

1 tube of $45 ointment from CVS (apparently, i have SHINGLES.)

2 bathrooms that are still not clean

3 kids with me in the dr’s office (but they were actually all REALLY good)

4 times up and down the aisles at Publix until i finally had everything on my list (i’m so bad about that)

5 hours of shows i have saved on DVR or OnDemand that i am dying to watch

6: number of chicken nuggets harper ate along with fries and she was still hungry when we got home (grow much?)

7 diapers changed today

8 reasons i really need to stay up until probably midnight, but i am exhausted.  think i’ll just go brush my teeth and hit the sack.

9 minutes to get the kids from the house, down the hall, down the elevator, across the street, and into their carseats (on a good day)

10 dry lima beans in the kids’ new “bean jar” (explanation to follow at a later post)

[i have great plans to do a post about last week’s beach house stay, but not sure if it’ll happen this week.  my baby sister gets here tomorrow!]

what’s up

this is, photographically speaking, a sad post.  however, i maintain that even though i’m a photographer, i’m a busy mom and i have the right to use a point and shoot when i feel like it.  i also have the right to leave pictures sideways when wordpress is being retarded instead of using up more time by opening other programs, blah blah blah.  it won’t hurt your neck, i promise.

harper is at my parents’ grandkids camp and we’re headed to the sebastian beach house on saturday.  lots to do, but it’s been a pretty productive week so far (did i mention harper was gone?).  still have some cleaning to do…i always leave that until the last day because i hate it love to come home to a clean house.

this is a little “teaser” of something i’ve been working on…i’ll do a post when i’m totally done (which probably won’t be for a few weeks due to our vacation/company schedule).

layne totally agrees about it being a busy week.  i kept her in wal-mart way too long today (i swear i’ll never go back.  that place makes me feel like a complete idiot.) and she ended up falling asleep on the way home while eating her lunch of doritos that i grabbed at the check-out.  i’ll give her a sandwich when she wakes up.  and some brussel sprouts to make up for the doritos.

SO excited about the beach house!!  i’ll try to post at least once while we’re there, but i’m not giving any guarantees.

10 random things i’m good at

  • bathing an infant
  • making an omelet
  • changing a diaper in the dark
  • remembering song lyrics, people’s birthdays, and names of people i’ve only met once
  • pushing a heavy shopping cart with one hand (while holding a baby in the other)
  • forgetting my phone
  • estimating what size tupperware container i need just by looking at the amount of leftover food
  • wearing a hat (i don’t think i take advantage of this nearly enough)
  • putting my foot in my mouth
  • procrastinating (hmmm…could possibly be doing that now….)

i’m no expert, but…

wrote this post awhile ago…we’re at the condo with ryan’s family so i figured tonight’s a good time to post it…

this is a list of some things that i think all mothers of new babies should have or use or do.  strictly my own opinions, of course…everyone’s experience and view of their job is different.

  • get some good swaddling blankets or some of these…if you don’t settle, you won’t have to re-wrap your kid 4 times when they wiggle thier hands out of the burrito.  this time around, i had a friend give me some gtreat big muslin “blankets”…they’ve been so awesome that i ordered 2 more from target.  (ps: swaddling is KEY in calming your newborn if you can’t figure out why they’re crying…it’s also a clutch move in getting them to sleep as long as possible – which is usually not longer than 3 hours.)
  • get some type of baby carrier…whether it be a sling, a bjorn, or whatever.  babies love to be “worn” and it allows you to tend to the baby and still have two free hands.
  • cut baby wipes in half.  newborn’s bottoms aren’t big enough to need a regular-sized wipe and cutting them obviously makes a batch last twice as long.  if there is a large poop, you can always use two.
  • get one of these (carseat stroller frame).
  • get a swing or a vibrating bouncy seat or both.  your baby will thank you for it.  actually, YOU will thank you for it.
  • my favorite baby books: Baby 411 and Happiest Baby on the Block
  • if you are nursing, make sure you’re very aware of foods that you should avoid.  babies that are gassy are no fun…there are many foods that mommy eats that can make them that way: broccolli in any capacity, cabbage (i made the mistake of eating some eggrolls last week and maitland paid dearly for it), excessive raw veggies, etc.
  • if baby does get gassy, there are lots of anti-gas remedies on the market.  we’ve used milicon and i think it works pretty well.
  • i LOVE Lilypads.  they are sticky silicone circles that you stick to your breast.  they put pressure on the nipple to alleviate leakage, and if you do leak, it stays put.  [unfortunately, these don’t work for mommies with a large milk supply…or so i’ve been told.]  they are like $20 per set, but will last you a month or two…i think they’re totally worth it because every other breast pad i’ve ever tried could be seen through my shirt (the lumps).
  • don’t set high goals for the first 3 months as far as life outside of your baby.  there will be days when you feel like literally all you did all day was nurse, burp, and change diapers.  the baby days pass SO quickly, so just soak it up while you can.  i am really making sure i remind myself of this while maitland is tiny…i have a totally different perspective this time, being pretty confident that he is our last baby.  i don’t beat myself up if my kids watch an hour of tv or if the laundry’s not done or if my legs are hairy.  i have really been trying to remind myself that all that is required is my best for the day.
  • lastly, i’m looking in the mirror when i say this, but don’t be afraid to ask for help or to ask other people what worked for them.  my one regret for when harper was a baby was that i was a little cocky and tried to tell myself that i didn’t need help.  i think i did a fine job on my own, but i could have saved myself some frustrations by simply asking other moms what worked for them.

daddy dearest

i’m not a huge advocate for mother’s day or father’s day or valentine’s day or any other holiday where i feel obligated by our culture to express myself.  yes, i care about my mother(s) and father and my valentine very VERY much, but i don’t need a special day to tell them so.  that being said, i would still like to give my dad a little something today.  i didn’t get anything in the mail on time, so here goes:  here are some random things i love/appreciate about him….

1. he has super cool handwriting and an awesome signature (i always used to try to copy it in high school and i could never do it).

2. he has a green thumb and a pretty extensive knowledge of plants.

3. he was in the circus in college…did a little of everything.

4. one time when we were kids he let us play with dry ice in the pool.

5. he is a fantastic grandpa (“poppy”).

6. he likes to eat things over the sink.

7. speaking of eating, he has some wierd food habits that i think are cool: he loves cold fried chicken, sardines, and will bite into a vidalia onion like it’s an apple.

8. he is kinda artsy and not alot of people know it.

9. he knows alot about dogs and horses.

10. he is the most patriotic person i know…absolutely passionate about his country and government.

11. he likes old movies…john waye and clash of the titans and such.

12. he’s very handy.

13. we went on some incredible vacations when i was younger, thanks to him (and his thousands of frequent flier miles).

14. he made us a tire swing in the front yard when we were kids.  now there’s one in the backyard for his grandkids.

15. his mom lives in an assisted living home and he visits her all the time.

16. he is adventurous.  (about 5 years ago we made an audition tape for the amazing race.)

17. he has a great sense of humor.

18. he taught me to love oldies and country music.

19. he makes a great effort to get to know my husband.

20. he is a good cook…few tricks up his sleeve.

love you dad!!  hope you’re my dad for a long long time!  xoxo

Happy Birthday to my BEST BUD

got this from amy last week and decided to use it to talk about my husband ryan on his birthday.

I am… blessed to be married to an amazing guy who is truly my best friend and partner.

I think… he is the coolest, most interesting person i’ve ever met.

I should… be more thankful for him on a daily basis.

I dream… of what the rest of our lives together will be like.  full of adventure, i hope.

I want… our kids to understand what a great daddy they have.

I know… he’ll be embarrassed by this post.

I don’t like… when he’s not around.

I smell… um…not answering this.

I hear… him snoring almost every night.

I fear… he may never know how much respect i have for him.

I usually… am asleep when he kisses me goodbye in the morning.

I search… for ways to get him to give up his saltine addiction.

I miss… the days when it was just us (obviously i love the kids, but we had some good times before they came along).

I always… know what he is about to do/say (almost always).

I regret… nagging him for 4 years about us getting married.

I wonder… quite often about the rest of our life together.

I crave… his attention.

I remember… when i used to see him in the cafeteria at PBA.

I forget… to tell him things all the time and it drives me crazy.

I feel… happy and calm when we hug.

I can…. make him laugh.

I can’t… imagine my life without him in it.

I am happy… That’s all.

I lose… anytime we play anything together.

I sing… his praises?   hehe

I listen… to him read to the girls at night (and it makes me smile).

I shop…. for him because he hates it.

I love… many many things about him.

wish list

we’ve been (FINALLY) seeing some interest in our condo.  someone came yesterday to walk through it and another someone is supposed to come tomorrow.  this is exciting, but i’m definitely jaded from having the place on the market for so long (TWICE) and having very little interest shown.  that being said, i do get my hopes up a little bit avery now and then and think about what i’d like to have in somewhere we might move.  (i think i may already have made a list like this on my blog before, but it’s my blog and i can do what i want.  so there.)

i want: A THIRD BEDROOM.  maitland is cool sharing a room with mom and dad now, but it would be a shame in a year or so if he had to choose between living with the parents or living in a pink room with his sisters.

i want: A PANTRY.  i’m sick of having food in the cupboard, on top of the fridge, in a basket on top of the toaster oven, AND in glass jars on the counter.

i want: A YARD.  doesn’t even have to be fenced in…i’d settle for any type of grassy area just outside the door.  also, somewhere to hook up a hose (that is not a showerhead) would be cool

i want: A DRIVEWAY.  just really a place to park where no one else can and it is mere steps away from my door.  what a concept.

i want: A GARAGE.  i’d love to have a place to put all of our tools, paint, holiday decoration bins, camping stuff, and sports equipment.  oh, and a car, if there was any room left.  ha!

i want: BIKES.  i have seriously been aching for a few years for us to be able to go on family bike rides.  that can’t happen until we have a garage.

big wish: AN ART ROOM/OFFICE. this would be unreal.  definitely a huge stretch, but a girl can dream, right?

[i would like to add that i know alot of people have it worse than us.  i am content.  i realize i am extremely blessed.  this list doesn’t discount that, i guess i just feel like it’s okay to dream a little sometimes.]

this one would be nice…

newborn love

  • they sleep like 20 hours a day.  and look so darn cute doing it.
  • i love picking out the lint they get between their fingers and toes.
  • newborn noises.  grunts, squeaks, even cries.
  • incredibly soft skin.
  • their poop doesn’t stink.
  • their food is free.
  • innocence, pure and simple.
  • they don’t talk back.
  • i love how everything is so…round.  their legs are bowed.  little hands are always in fists.  cheeks are chubby.
  • so happy that all my babies love(d) to be swaddled.  love the burrito (and the effect that it has on a fussy little one).
