truth be told

i’ve been thinking alot lately about honesty.

i pride myself on being honest…sometimes to a fault.  i just feel that if you care about someone, you should respect them enough to tell them the truth even if it might be awkward sometimes.  i don’t follow the rule religiously…i’m not a rude person, so if i’ve just met someone, or if it’s someone i know is in a fragile state, i’m careful.  i cannot stand it when people are fake or “polite” just for the sake of avoiding tension.

i’ve had two different situations come up recently where i had good reason to lie, but i didn’t.  did i hurt feelings?  maybe initially, but i’m confident that in each situation my friend was appreciative of my being up front with them.  in both situations it was hard to tell them how i was really feeling, and i thought hard about doing it, but i still feel like it’s what i should’ve done.

i’m halfway through “The Year of Biblical Living” by A.J. Jacobs.  it’s a GREAT book but i’s taking me forever to read.  anyway, in the middle of one of my dilemmas, i read this passage about his wife running into an old friend while they were at a restaurant:

“Julie Schoenberg?” says the ponytailed woman.

It’s an acquaintance Julie hasn’t seen since college.  Hugs are exchanged, compliments toward babies are extended, spouses introduced, mutual friends discussed.

At the end of the meal, we get our check, and Julie’s friend says: “We should all get together and have a playdate sometime.”

“Absolutely,” says Julie.

“Uh, I don’t know,” I say.

Julie’s friend laughs nervously, not sure what to make of that.

Julie glares at me.

“You guys seem nice,” I say.  “But I don’t really want new friends right now.  So I think I’ll take a pass.”

A few weeks ago, I read a book called Radical Honesty, which was about telling the truth in all situations.  It talks about the scary thrill of total candor, the Six Flags-worthy adrenaline rush.  I felt that.  I heard myself saying the words, but they seemed unreal, like I was in an off-Broadway production.

Julie is not glaring at me anymore.  She’s too angry to look in my direction.

“It’s just that I don’t have enough time to see our old friends, so I don’t want to overcommit,” I say, shrugging.  Hoping to take the edge off, I add: “Just being honest.”

“Well, I’d love to see you,” says Julie.  “A.J. can stay home.”

i dont’ know that i can go this far, but it sure makes me think about how life would be if i were totally honest all the time.

so, how about you, kind post reader?  how honest are you?  also, would you prefer someone be totally honest with you or would you just like them to be “nice”?  have you ever been non-appreciative of someone’s honesty?

“In the end, people appreciate frankness more than flattery.”  Proverbs 28:23

my day so far

got up, got the kids dressed and fed, did the dishes, got myself dressed, got packed up (or so i thought), and headed out around 9:30.  we were on our way to a petting zoo on palm beach (random, but yes) to meet up with some friends.  walked to the garage and realized that my car wasn’t there (it usually is during spring training season).  got to the car, got the kids strapped in. took off.

[i’m watching last night’s idol.  matt KILLED it.  he is so so so good.]

the petting zoo was actually a special storytime at the society of the four arts on palm beach.  i have several friends who go to it frequently and thought i’d give it a go since it’s been so nice out and i knew harper would love the animals.  it was NUTS.  there were seriously at least 100 kids there, not to mention the one or two caretakers with each of them.  the animals were cool and it was fun to see some facebook friends in real life.

[seriously…scott is TERRIBLE.  people, he doesn’t want you to feel sorry for him because he’s blind.  DON’T VOTE FOR HIM!  i love his shirt, though…i’d love to see ryan in that shirt.]

it took me a ridiculous 10 minutes to round up harper and get to the car so we could meet ryan for lunch.  on the way to wendy’s, i stopped at cvs because i’d neglected to pack anything but puffs for layne to eat…i needed babyfood and REALLY need binkys.  i was at target last night and they don’t carry mams, apparently.  anyway, i unstrapped the kids, carried/pulled them inside just to find that i guess cvs didn’t have any either.  put them back in their seats and drove 10 blocks to wendy’s.  there was a winn-dixie adjacent to wendy’s, so we meandered over there while we waited for ryan to get there.  [megan joy is BEAUTIFUL, but i just can’t see her making a living off her voice.]  got the babyfood and then went to grab the binkys.  they were out.  UGH.

went over and ate burgers/babyfood with ryan/daddy.  after lunch we headed over to world thrift, my favorite thrift store.  i was originally headed over there to look for a play kitchen for the newly cleaned porch, but when i called ryan to tell him they had two and the best one was on sale for $15, he said no.  i don’t know why i was surprised.  my husband is stubborn.  i’ve been wanting to get harper a kitchen for a least a year and a half and he does NOT want one in our house for some reason.  it’s so annoying, but i respect his opinion and would never go behind his back and buy it anyway (i love you, honey!).  headed home and the girls both feel asleep in the car.  layne “transferred” great, but harper was wide awake once i put her in the bed.  i finally made her go to sleep around 3:15, and here i sit.

[adam seriously carries himself exactly like david cook.  i went on and on last season about how cocky david was.  i guess i wouldn’t be surprised if adam won, but i so hope he doesn’t.]

gonna finish up idol, then i need to run to publix to pick up a few things (binkys!) and then we may go fly harper’s kite.  i have soccer tonight, which is always the highlight of my week.  i’m pretty sure it’s our last game (we haven’t won enough to make the playoffs), so that’s too bad…but i’m 30 now, so i get to play in the summer league this year (whoo-hoo!)

March 24, 2009

it’s a dirty job, but somebody’s gotta do it.

we’re watching dirty jobs.  i seriously never get sick of this show.  even if it’s an episode i’ve seen twice, i can still watch it and be fully entertained.  i do sort-of have a crush on mike rowe, but it’s also just that i love seeing how stuff works or where it comes from.

anyway, today seemed pretty full.  got up and went to the gym this morning (YAY!), then picked up breakfast at mcdonald’s on the way to mom’s group at church (please no comments from the peanut gallery about cancelling out my workout…if you really know me, you know i could care less about eating fast food).  after mom’s group we came home, i fixed lunch, and then it was naptime.  both girls slept GREAT and i powered through the ironing basket…i hadn’t seen the bottom in months.  after they woke up, i was randomly motivated to clean the porch.  we’re making plans to utilize the area more effectively (i.e. get rid of the rusted grill we never use and put a play kitchen out there), so i thought i’d get started.  i moved all the plants down to one end, swept up most of the dirt and leaves, and cut back anything that looked dead.  if you’ve been to my house, you know how our porch is long and skinny.  we’re hoping that moving all the plants to one end will keep the dirt at that end…there’s a low spot in the concrete at the end closest to the area we use the most.  the rain brings all the dirt to that spot and then it just sits there.  i think we’re going to rent a pressure washer this weekend to get it super clean and then hope that it stays that way.  our neighbors on both sides have no plants, and both of their porches are super clean looking.  i hope we don’t have to get rid of all our plants for it to be clean…i like to have some green out there, plus harper loves to water them.

[blue bell rocky road….YUMMMY!]

before i started working outside, i decided to clean the plastic pool that i almost forgot we had.  layne is starting to crawl and i knew i needed to have a place she could sit and crawl where she wouldn’t scrape up her knees…also where she’d be contained.  i took it into the girls’ bathtub and started spraying it and scrubbing it.  at one point, i grabbed onto the lip of the pool to rotate it around and felt something disgusting.  “oh this thing is dirtier than i thought!”  i looked at the spot, expecting to see a huge growth of mildew and there was a cute little green tree frog.  he was squished up as tight as he could get.  i’d been spraying and scrubbing for about 5 minutes and he hadn’t moved (thank goodness…i would not want him loose in my house).  i finished cleaning the pool and then went to wake harper up from her nap to show her our little friend.  she loved it.  we’ve seen him before out there, but it’s been awhile.  i took a picture hoping to add it to this post, but harper’s asleep in our room so i can’t upload it.  when we got the pool back outside, i picked him up and took him over to the plants.  those frogs are so darn cute!  he curled around my finger like it was a branch.  little things make me happy.

this post is getting long, but one more nice thing about tonight was that we ate dinner outside.  we don’t have a table out there, but i had taken layne’s highchair out there so she could chew on a biscuit when she got fussy, so i figured we’d improvise.  we took chairs out, ryan and i ate off our laps (and put our drinks on a barstool), and harper used the milking stool as a little table to go with her dora camping chair.  we had frozen pizza, due to the fact that i was working outside and all of a sudden realized that i hadn’t even thought about dinner.  it was so nice out and it was great to do something a little different.

i wish i would’ve taken before pictures of the porch…but those of you who’ve seen it will appreciate it when i post after pictures (hopefully soon!).

i’m feeling good…

…i just got back from the gym AND i got a full night’s sleep.

layne slept 11 hours last night.  oh man.  let me type that again: LAYNE SLEPT 11 HOURS LAST NIGHT!!!!!

we tried formula again two nights ago and for some reason, after many rejections, that time she decided it was okay.  she took an ounce of it then slept for 8 hours straight – her personal record.  last night she chugged 4 ounces at 7:30.  then she slept until 6:30!  i nursed her and changed her and she went back to sleep for another hour.  cue singing angels.  if this means that she’ll want to wean, i’ll be sad, but honestly it’s worth it if i’m getting a full night’s rest.  we’ve had harper in our room the past 4 nights, so we’ll probably do that for one or two more nights, just in case.

i’m so excited about the gym!  this morning i had a microfit evaluation.  i get a free one every 3 months.  so, i’m going to post my results on my blog so that i can monitor my progress.  if you read this and then see me in person, please don’t mention anything containing the words “body fat” or “sit-ups”.  i’m in the 30-39 age range, so i’m thinking that most of the things i scored “excellent” on are just because i’m “young”.

  • weight: 130.6  (i think before i got pregnant i was 128…my goal would probably be 125, but if that means i have to get rid of my nightly bowl of ice cream, than i’m okay at 128.  i haven’t weighed less than that since junior year in college when i was running 6 miles a day.)
  • body fat % : 21, ideal
  • triceps pinch: 14.8
  • side pinch: 16.1
  • thigh pinch: 26.2
  • blood pressure: 92/59, excellent
  • resting heart rate: 50, excellent
  • biceps strength: 67, excellent (i guess lifting the two kiddos all day is good for something!)
  • back flexibility: 40, needs work (sit & reach…this was so embarrassing…my fingertips were even with my heels)
  • push-ups (bent knee): 34, excellent (this is measured by how many you can do in a minute)
  • sit-ups: 5, needs work (to say the least…this is also how many in a minute.  that is not a typo…it really says FIVE.  i was humiliated!)

i am SO excited about the gym.  i don’t really want to leave the kids in the “kidzone” for longer than an hour, so today i only got 20 minutes on the elliptical after my evaluation, but i can’t wait to get a routine going and try some of the classes and stuff (especially spin!).

March 20, 2009

where in the world is osama bin laden?

so, the more i’ve thought about it today (yes i do think about my blog throughout the day…i have make an effort to force adult thoughts into my head), i’ve decided that the posts i like to read most are the ones where people write about their everyday life…true bLOGgers…those who use their blogs as a diary.  therefore, i’ve decided that anytime i’m lacking “quality” material, i’ll just write a “log” of the day.

guess what movie we’re watching.  did you see my title?  🙂  it’s a morgan spurlock documentary – he’s the guy who did “supersize me” (the EXCELLENT film about his 30 days of eating nothing but mcdonald’s).  so far it’s interesting.  he’s gotten a little more hokey since he had a show on tv (28 days or something?), but it’s very informative so far.  [there have been more terrorist attacks in the world in the past 6 years than in the 20 years before that combined.]

this morning after the movie, harper and i hung out while layne napped.  i did some random design work and finally got dressed around 11:00.  packed us a picnic lunch and met my friend kathleen at the playground.  sometimes it’s so nice just to sit on a bench and talk.  we got home right at the girls’ naptime (2:00).  harper decided not to sleep, but thanks to a stack of new library books, i didn’t hear a peep out of her for 45 minutes.

i talked to my mother-in-law for awhile today.  it is such a blessing to have a solid, life-enriching relationship with her.  she is a special gal and i feel very fortunate to have conversations with her like the one we had today.  i love you sherry (and not just when you read my blog, haha).

probably the highlight of my day today was a visit to xpress fitness.  it’s a gym that is downstairs and across the street…approximately a minute and a half from my door (that includes the walk down the hall and the elevator ride).  since layne still isn’t sleeping well at night and i’m up at least twice, it is near impossible for me to wake up at the necessary 5:30 in the morning to run.  the only solution i’ve thought of is to join a gym.  we don’t really have $50 a month sitting around, so i didn’t really think it would happen.  until today.  i can join this gym for $30 a month!  this includes child care and classes!  i’m going for a try-out work-out tomorrow, but i seriously don’t need any more convincing.  i’m just doing it mostly to reinforce my husband’s doubts.  stay tuned.

gotta go.  i’m missing alot of information in this movie and it’s getting good!

March 20, 2009

i’m in a funk.  i really have no material right now.  i do have an idea for a new series, though, that i’ll be thinking over and possibly starting next week…still mulling it over.  if anyone has anything they’d like to see me write about, PLEASE feel free to comment and let me know.  i don’t want to lose any loyal fans!  😉

i was going to post some pictures from our surprise weekend, but instead i’ll just tell you to check out sarah and amy‘s blogs…

harper’s watching “the little mermaid” (i’m fastforwarding all the scary ursela parts).  it is surreal.  i feel like i was a little girl watching that movie like 5 years ago.  i cannot believe it was almost 20 years ago that i was seeing it for the first time (1989)!

gotta go cook some sausage and wash some sheets.

pizza delivery

this past weekend, 3 college friends and layne and i all drove up to raleigh, nc, to surprise one of our dear friends, sarah. she had a baby two months ago and will be moving to south africa at the end of the summer for probably 5 years. we weren’t sure when we’d see her again and we were all anxious to meet little kieren, so we decided to go for it and drive up. after we made the plans, we decided it’d be cool to make it a surprise. we got sarah’s husband to help us plan and it worked out perfectly! for the full story of the surprise (and from her viewpoint), visit her blog.

Wednesday (6/11): drove to Gainesville (my sister’s), got there 2 hours after i’d planned to
Thursday (6/12): drove to Tallahassee (my parents’) with 3 girls in tow (Layne, Harper, and Hannah – my niece) to borrow thier car and drop off the two older girls
Friday (6/13): layne & i left at 6:30 am for Jacksonville, picked up 3 friends, drove to Raleigh (amy drove THE WHOLE WAY!). arrived in Raleigh around 6:30 pm for probably the best surprise i’ve ever pulled off in my life

Saturday (6/14): spent most of the day on the couch surrounded by good friends, food, laptops, and two very cute babies (one was mine – layne, and the other was kieren – sarah’s adorable two month old)

Sunday (6/15): attended casey and sarah’s church, followed by more laying around and movie watching

Monday (6/16): packed up and left sarah’s at 7:00 am,  drove to jacksonville (shanel drove THE WHOLE WAY…6 months pregnant!), dropped 2 friends off (amy had flown home from raleigh), drove to my parents’

Tuesday (6/17): left tallahassee at 8:30 am, drove to gainesville to drop off hannah and take a break, drove to orlando for a short visit with my in-laws and some extended family, then finally drove HOME – arrived 6:30 pm

WHEW.  right now i’m still in my pajamas and greasy hair.  trying to unpack, catch up on cleaning and laundry, and just recover from a whirlwind trip.  i’m a dork and made this map to diagram my trip.  i’ll post pictures from the trip later (maybe after i brush my teeth).

March 14, 2009

it’s cold.

i’m in north carolina. i’m ashamed of myself because i haven’t written a post in almost a week. however, that’s not going to change now. i’d like to write a fun post about what i’m experiencing right now, but the quality will be multiplied when i include pictures which i can’t do until i get home. plus, we’re watching a justin timberlake dvd which demands my full attention. yesterday, 3 friends and layne and i drove 9 hours to raleigh to surprise an old friend. she was surprised. VERY surprised. it was one of the coolest moments i’ve had in a long time.

more later.

in the meantime, while you’re biting your nails waiting for my brilliant run-down of this weekend, check out two etsy shops:
